Timber Fence Painting
Painting an existing or new timber fence with weather-resistant paint, one side or both, in the colour you choose.

Assessing the fence first
Paint does not fix a failing fence, and painting one is money spent twice. So the first thing is an honest look at what is there.
If the posts are sound, the rails are holding and the palings are in reasonable condition, painting is worthwhile. If the fence is at the end of its life, replacing it and painting the new fence is the better spend, and we will say so.
Preparation
How the paint lasts has more to do with preparation than with the paint itself. An existing fence that has been weathering for years needs work before a brush goes near it.
- The fence is cleaned down so paint has a sound surface to bond to
- Loose and flaking existing coating is dealt with
- Any protruding or loose fixings are addressed
- Damaged palings are identified so you can decide whether to replace them before painting
- The timber needs to be dry before coating
One side or both sides
A boundary fence has two faces, and painting both means access to both sides. That means the neighbouring property, so it is agreed in advance rather than assumed.
Where only one side is painted, it is normally the side facing the property paying for the work. This is confirmed before the job so there is no confusion on the day.
Colour
A large range of colours is available, so the fence can be matched to the house, the roof, existing trims or the landscaping.
Colour behaves differently outdoors than it does on a swatch indoors. Dark colours read heavier and sit hotter in the sun; lighter colours show marks and dirt more readily. Worth thinking about for a surface as large as a boundary fence.
New timber
New treated pine is not always ready to paint the day it goes up. Freshly treated timber can hold moisture, and coating it too early works against the finish.
If you want a new fence painted, raise it at the site measure so the timing can be planned properly rather than rushed.
Weather
Painting outdoors is weather dependent. Rain, heavy dew, cold and very hot conditions all affect how a coating goes on and cures, so painting is scheduled around the forecast.

Do you paint both sides of a fence?
Yes, where there is access to both sides. Because the second side is on the neighbouring property, access is agreed in advance rather than assumed.
What paint do you use on timber fences?
High quality weather-resistant paints suited to exterior timber, in a large range of colours. We do not publish brand names or coating lifespans.
Can a new timber fence be painted straight away?
Not always. New treated pine can hold moisture, and coating it too early works against the finish. Raise it at the site measure so the timing can be planned.
Is it worth painting an old fence?
It depends on the condition. If the posts and rails are sound, painting is worthwhile. If the fence is at the end of its life, replacing it first is the better spend.
