A fence with one layer of vertical timber palings fixed side by side to horizontal rails. The palings sit in a single plane so the face of the fence is flat. It is the most common timber boundary fence in Sydney.

Fencing built from pine that has been pressure treated so it can be used outdoors in the weather and, at the correct treatment level, in the ground. New treated pine has a green or light tan cast that fades as it weathers, and it takes paint and stain well.

Single paling fence construction using Australian hardwood palings instead of treated pine. Hardwood is denser and heavier than pine, with more variation in colour and grain, and it weathers to a grey silver if left uncoated.

Both overlap the palings, so both close the sight line through the face of the fence. Lap and cap adds a capping rail along the top; lapped only leaves the paling tops exposed as the top line.

A lapped fence, either lapped only or lap and cap. Because the palings overlap, there is no straight gap to see through, and seasonal timber movement does not open up a sight line the way it can on a single paling fence.

It is a different material rather than a straight upgrade. Hardwood is denser, heavier and naturally durable, with more character in the grain, and it costs more. Treated pine is lighter, easier to work and less expensive. Which one suits depends on the property, the look you want and the budget.

It depends on the length and height of the fence, the fence style, the number and size of gates, whether an existing fence has to be removed, access to the fence line, and ground conditions. You send through your measurements and details and receive a fencing estimate based on that information. If you want to proceed, a free on-site visit is arranged and the boundary is measured properly, then you receive an updated, site-verified estimate.

Single paling in treated pine uses the least material for a given length. Lapped only sits in the middle. Lap and cap uses the most treated pine because of both the overlap and the capping rail. Hardwood is a more expensive material than treated pine.

Work usually starts within 1 to 2 weeks of a deposit being received, and materials are usually delivered within 2 to 3 days.

That is a matter for the property owners to agree between themselves. We can provide a written quote you can share with your neighbour so you are both working from the same figures.

The boundary is measured, any existing fence is removed and disposed of, the fence line is set out, posts are dug and concreted, rails are fixed between the posts, palings are fixed to the rails, gates are hung and adjusted, and the site is cleaned up with old material taken away.

Each post is set 600mm deep into the ground and secured with at least one full 20kg bag of concrete. Posts can also be filled with concrete up to one third of their length for extra strength.

Timber posts or 65mm x 65mm steel posts. Steel posts are often chosen for longer runs, taller fences and gate posts, because those positions carry the most load.

Timber fencing is built up to a maximum height of 2.4m. Common finished heights are 1.5m, 1.8m, 2.1m and 2.4m, and 1.8m is the usual height for a residential side or rear boundary.

A standard 30 metre timber fence, including demolition and removal of the existing fence, typically takes 1 to 3 days. Longer runs, difficult access, rock, sloping ground, retaining work and multiple gates all extend that.

Yes. On sloping ground the fence is either stepped down in level sections or raked to follow the ground. Which suits depends on how steep the fall is and what looks right against the house and neighbouring fences, so it is decided on site.

Walk the fence line and count your paces; an adult pace is close enough to a metre for an initial estimate. Measure each straight run separately, note where the boundary turns a corner, and note each gate opening and roughly how wide it needs to be. The boundary is measured properly at the free site visit.

Yes. Existing fencing and its footings are removed and disposed of, and old brick walls can also be safely removed and taken away. Removal is usually quoted together with the replacement fence.

Yes. Pedestrian, single, double and driveway gates are built to match single paling, lap and cap, lapped only and hardwood single paling fencing, in the same timber and to the same top line as the fence.

Yes. Gates are built from the same palings and finished to the same height and top line as the fence. On a lap and cap fence the capping line is carried across the gate and through the opening.

Yes. Timber fences are painted using high quality weather-resistant paints in a large range of colours, on one side or both sides. Because the second side is on the neighbouring property, access to it is agreed in advance.

Yes. Treated pine timber sleeper retaining walls are built using H4 treated sleepers to Australian Standard grading. Retaining is often quoted together with fencing, because a change in level frequently has to be held before the fence can be built.

Timber fencing is built around pool areas, but whether a particular fence satisfies pool barrier requirements depends on your property, your pool and the requirements that apply to it. Requirements are established before work starts, and compliance of a pool barrier is assessed and certified by your local council or an accredited certifier.

Pool barrier requirements in New South Wales are set by legislation and the applicable Australian Standard, and they depend on the property and the pool, including when it was built. We deliberately do not publish a generic list, because a generic answer can be wrong for a specific property. Your council or an accredited certifier can confirm what applies to yours.

It depends on the height of the wall, where it sits on the property, what it is retaining and the requirements of your council. It is discussed at the site measure rather than answered generically, because the answer genuinely varies.

Timber fencing is built up to 2.4m, but what you are permitted to build can depend on where the fence sits on the property, what is either side of it, whether it forms part of a pool barrier and the requirements that apply to your property. Raise the height you want at the site measure so any constraint is identified before work is scheduled.
